5 Common ERP Challenges

The key is to set measurable, achievable goals with a clear direction and purpose. Ensure you have the resources to implement your solution, whether that be in-house or externally.

Implementation is a thorough and rigorous process, you will need a dedicated team to take ownership of this activity.

3. The Customisation

One of the most common misconceptions with ERP is that it requires a great degree of cus-tomisation at all points in its life-cycle. Whilst it does require a degree of customisation, it is not quite as demanding as being fully-personalised. Additionally, implementing ERP with the mindset that it will requires zero customisation, is also a mistake.

You may also choose to forge a new path. In other words - don’t have your team focus on simply automating the current ERP processes, look to the future and what the ERP processes might potentially look like in order to harness its full power.


4. The Integration

In order to reap the benefits of ERP, you must integrate your new system with your other enterprise systems currently in place.

A potential challenge you will face after choosing your ERP software is deciding which processes you should be integrating, or indeed, not integrating. They may just be an addition cost which bring no benefit. So, before integrating any aspect, ask yourself the question “is this essential to running the businesses? Or is it simply a luxury?”

5. The Change

As tough as technology can sometimes be to predict, people are always more unpredictable. Change management synchronising with ERP implementation is therefore fundamental. Key steps should be:

  • Inform ALL employees of news and milestones as implementation progresses
  • Establish and maintain reliable feedback processes for employees (keep communication channels very much open)
  • Value employees’ ideas and input, and make them aware of this
  • Provide training in a creative and fun way to motivate them
  • Celebrate high user performance and going above and beyond in the implementation stage

This may seem like a daunting time for your business, but these challenges are easily solved and/or avoidable, and when you weigh them up with the advantages, the value of introducing ERP is indisputable.
